Biography

Karl's upbringing was steeped in the world of directing and production, courtesy of his filmmaker parents. Immersed in film sets from a young age, he cultivated his passion for visual storytelling.

Throughout his college years, Karl honed his craft by directing numerous short promotional videos for L’Orient le Jour and crafting music videos for local independent bands like Taxi 404, Grave Jones, Tamara Qaddoumi,  Gizzmo and Wondergaap.

Inspired by cinematic luminaries such as Kubrick, Lynch, Wong Kar Wai, the Coen brothers, and Kaurismaki, Karl embarked on a journey to pay homage to his idols. His graduation film, "Hollow Peak," a nod to his influences, garnered acclaim at prestigious international festivals like Sitges Film Festival and Dumbo Film Festival. It notably won the Maskoon Film Festival in 2018.

Transitioning from advertising to more artistic endeavors, Karl's creative pursuits took a socially conscious turn. His poignant short film “Cradle” honoring the victims of the Beirut explosion stands as a testament to his commitment to meaningful storytelling. The short film was part of “Beirut 6:07”, a mini-series nominated to the Emmys in 2021.

In a bold move in 2022, Karl shifted his focus from commercial ventures to projects with profound social and environmental impacts. Co-creating and co-directing with Julien Boutros, the groundbreaking interactive play “Farha" was staged within an entire residential building and marked a highlight in his career, earning widespread acclaim.

The following year, Karl's transformative vision manifested in the renovation of Cinema Royal, once a pornographic cinema, into a vibrant non-profit cultural hub. Through weekly programs featuring cinema screenings, concerts, plays, and discussions, Karl aimed to invigorate Lebanon's cultural landscape during challenging times.

Captivated by the world’s intricacies and absurdities, Karl has recently begun sharing his visual diary through poetic, cinematic short films on his social media. These works explore themes of philosophy, well-being, and spirituality as they manifest in everyday life, weaving depth and resonance into his storytelling.

He is presently crafting "Last Exit," his inaugural feature film, a crime psychological thriller that delves into the eccentricities and subcultures of Beirut. Through the perspective of a fractured and anxious detective, the film offers a gripping exploration of the city’s and the self’s depths.
